Hyperesthesia
What is it?
Hyperesthesia is a condition where your skin becomes extremely sensitive to touch, temperature, or other sensations. Normal stimuli that shouldn't cause discomfort - like clothing touching your skin, a gentle breeze, or bed sheets - can feel intensely uncomfortable or even painful. This heightened sensitivity occurs when nerves become overactive or the nervous system incorrectly amplifies normal sensations. It gained recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic as a distinctive symptom in some patients.
What does it look like?
Hyperesthesia is invisible - the affected skin typically appears completely normal:
- No rash, redness, or visible skin changes
- Skin looks and feels normal to others examining it
- You may notice yourself pulling away from touch or avoiding contact
- Difficulty wearing certain clothes or fabrics
- Avoiding activities that involve skin contact
Where does it appear?
Hyperesthesia can affect:
- Generalized: Entire body surface, particularly trunk and back
- Abdomen and back: Most commonly reported areas, especially in COVID-19 cases
- Arms and legs: May feel like burning or electric sensations
- Localized areas: Following nerve distributions after shingles or injury
- Variable patterns: May shift location or intensity throughout the day
Associated features
Hyperesthesia often occurs with:
- Burning or stinging sensations without visible cause
- Feeling like sunburn without sun exposure
- Electric shock-like sensations
- Extreme discomfort from clothing, especially tight-fitting garments
- Relief from warm baths or showers
- Difficulty sleeping due to sheet contact
- Anxiety about being touched
When to see a doctor
Seek medical attention for:
- New onset hyperesthesia, especially with fever or other symptoms
- Sensitivity lasting more than a few days
- Hyperesthesia following COVID-19 or other infections
- Pain severe enough to interfere with daily activities
- Associated weakness, numbness, or other neurological symptoms
- Hyperesthesia in a specific pattern suggesting nerve damage
- No improvement with simple comfort measures
